The Creative Power of Words

There is a famous experiment done by Dr. Masaru Emoto that looks at what happens when water is treated to two different types of stimuli.  One set of stimuli consists of peaceful, loving, positive and harmonizing thoughts.  This involves the expressed emotions of the people having conversations around this water. The other water is exposed to people communicating hurtful, angry words and emotions. These water samples exposed to two different types of stimulus energy were examined under an electron microscope.  (See figures). This research and the conclusions he came to are discussed extensively in the 2011 bestseller, The Miracle of Water.  In this groundbreaking and definitive book, Dr. Emoto shows conclusively that the words we speak have the power to affect the very structure of things in the real world in a demonstrable, scientifically provable way.

Why am I so interested in what crystallized water looks like under an electron microscope after said water is frozen?  Because we humans are conservatively about 60% water.  The numbers vary based on factors like age, gender, and physical fitness, with different organs in the body having a higher percentage of water.  The heart, for instance, which produces the biggest electric field of the body, has a water composition of about 73% (the brain composition is similar), while the lungs are about 83% water.  The conclusions that can be drawn don’t just stop at the idea of showing how words and emotions can produce beautiful, symmetric crystals or disordered and aesthetically unpleasant structures under the microscope, but have huge implications for showing the connection between both mental and physical well-being.  Kind words, emotions, affirmations and gratitude have the potential to positively affect the function of the very cells of our body.  Potentially, our mental states can impact our total body health.  These are the questions and precepts being tested in the emerging field and studies of mind-body medicine.

It also ties into what I have studied and learned about the power of positive emotions and words to change physical reality.  Thoughts, words and emotions have a vibration.  As I have said before, we humans are vibratory beings living in a vibratory world.  With Dr. Emoto’s research and findings, there is every possibility that the very words we hear and the emotions with which we surround ourselves have the potential to affect our health and well-being both for the positive and negative.  This brings the conversation back to the question: What words and emotions are you listening and vibrating to on a regular basis?

I’m writing this blog in March 2025.  There are many harsh words and fear-provoking emotions being expressed in all available print, video, and aural media 24-7.  The non-stop news cycle of sound bites and screaming headlines never stops and never downshifts or takes a breath.  Doom and death scrolling is a way of life for some people, even when they plan to do otherwise.  Screens are addictive, and the social media algorithms are designed to give us dopamine surges (pleasure) and continue to feed us stimuli to keep us engaged, online, and scrolling. There is also the option to not partake of this firehose of vibratory information that has the potential to severely and negatively impact our health and well-being.  Yes, I am really harping on this, because all of it has the potential to negatively impact our health if the negative input continues without being checked.  More and more mental health professionals and physicians are concluding that our bodies and psyches are not equipped to handle the amount of stress and conflict and “fight or flight” input that we are being marinated in on a daily basis.

Sound Bath with Singing Bowls

My MO is to play relaxing, familiar or uplifting music, or targeted sound bath almost non-stop when I am home. I’m not binge-watching dramas because some of them can evoke strong negative responses, as well. I also don’t want to numb out in front of the TV, which is also not helpful.  I am not perfect and sometimes find myself scrolling or reflexively watching one show after another on TV to numb out. I am focused on curating a positive home environment because I want to encourage a mental health positive environment in the areas of my life I can control. Having to be in other less positive stimuli outside my home is inevitable, but awareness of options is key.  I walk my puppy to music or listen to the birds and immerse in nature.  I marvel at the number of people with their faces plastered to screens as they walk their dogs.  In all sincerity, our nervous system, and our eyes are not equipped to deal with the nonstop glow of the phosphors from screens. I have used blue blocker glasses for years and have my screens on dark screen mode to diminish the impact from bright white screen light.  Screens too close to bedtime have been proven to disrupt sleep, adding sleep deprivation to over stimulation, from nonstop fight or flight stimuli.  I also have four rule of thumb questions I ask when it comes to getting absorbed in the on-screen life, at the cost of living my actual life:

  • Is viewing/hearing this vital to my existence and life RIGHT NOW?

  • Will I be in mortal danger (life or death) if I don’t view/hear this information?

  • Is this information going to increase my joy or my angst?

  • Will viewing/hearing this result in me being able to take actionable steps to change my life or that of my family, or cause instantaneous world peace?

If, like me, your answer to the above questions is no, it is absolutely time for you to reach for some joy, peace and equanimity in your life.  Your body, your cells, and the people closest to you will likely thank you and welcome you to re-engage in life with them.  None of the world problems started today, nor will they be solved this day or tomorrow.  Plan to consciously disconnect for both your physical and mental health. Decide, rather than default, to when you will tune in for the next chapter of edicts, orders and pronouncements.  Peace and joy start at the cellular level. Reach for peace and cultivate joy.
