Our Security Foundation: Lower Three Energy Centers

A full discussion of the energy centers, or chakras, is an in-depth topic that can occupy entire books.  Rather than be an exhaustive discussion I’d like to introduce the concept of our lower energy centers from the standpoint of trying to understand and support where we are now. Much of the populace is sorely in need of bolstering our sense of security and stability. It is my hope that this breakdown of the energetic significance of energy centers in everyday life will in some way help you feel a bit more secure in these rapidly changing and impactful times.

I have been beyond fortunate to have had a variety of amazing teachers over the years, who have helped me learn more about the chakras or energy centers that form the invisible energetic framework that undergirds our physical bodies.  With only slight differences in semantics, these teachers, with a variety of backgrounds agree on one thing: The energies responsible for feeling grounded and safe, being able to create physically and energetically and have a sense of personal power are foundational for all of us as humans.  The chakras or energy centers constitute an ancient metaphysical system described by many cultures and traditions and known in detail since antiquity. The chakra energetic system has been described in Hindu, Kabbalistic, Theosophistic, Christian, and Chinese energetic traditions.1) Rather than delve into the complexity of all those traditions, I will approach the chakras as energy centers that also function as portals to consciousness and tangible conscious action.  They tap into and access the basic feelings and energies of survival and connection to emotions, desire and creativity and personal power, identity and self-assertion 2).  These energies are those that are present in the foundational three energy centers.

Right away, you can see that everything happening in our society right now is happening in such a way (I think by design) to destabilize the very foundations of who we are as individuals, communities and as a people.  The energy and emotion of fear is the lever and tool that is being employed to destabilize, unground and make us feel helpless, hopeless, and that we have no ability to create safe spaces and care for our loved ones.  The thing that is best used to counteract these corrosive effects is firstly awareness of what is being done and the results of these actions.

When you are aware of the techniques being used to destabilize life as we know it, you can identify the sources of it and begin to act consciously to create more stability and safety and agency.  The lower three energy centers address personal stability, safety, and ability to have personal power, essential in creating offspring and a sense of home.  When you recognize their intended function, you also notice how this instability can manifest in your life, and that of your loved ones.  Most societal stability is built on having enough resources to provide food, and shelter and protection for oneself and family.  Although details regarding these concepts change from society to society, they are regarded as the basics of life.  When  access to jobs that provide income to provide that stability, healthcare to care for the physical body, and food to fuel the body is destroyed at the same time, an environment of crisis is engendered that provokes worry, FEAR, and anxiety.  These terms describe what has happened in 2025.  As the year progressed into 2026, our very communities were disrupted, destabilized, and individuals were physically, unpredictably and definitively removed from families and communities with little possible recourse or pushback.  Fear morphed into terror and rage and every understandable reactive emotion you can think of.  At one time or another all of us have felt disempowered, helpless and in despair for ourselves, our safety and that of our families and community.  All three of our personal energy centers were disrupted and destabilized.

This is the time when we can begin to look within to build networks of internal support and personal power, which can then extend to our families, communities and beyond. Individually, I firmly believe that meditation and looking inwardly for faith, grounding and foundation is key to starting to feel calm during uncertain times.  When we feel personally empowered, we can take action to protect and support ourselves, our family and community.  This is also why art and artists are so important, due to their creative and inspirational effect on individuals and society in creating joy and possibility.  We must draw on and generate faith, joy, love and community to conquer the fear and the hate.  Unshakeable faith that things will get better draws on joy and love and then unites communities.  Just as fear corrosively divides and destroys faith, joy, love and community create and build and are generative and expansive. These actions support our three foundational energy centers.  Empowered individuals will then build empowered, resilient and loving communities that can resist crisis.

I will happily quote Bad Bunny on this one: “The Only Thing More Powerful Than Hate is Love”.  Love is Power.
