Which Wolf Are You Feeding?

I’m a great believer in paying attention to the coincidences in life, because I firmly believe that “coincidence” is The Universe gently turning you in the right direction for insight, a lesson, or blessing. Such is the case with the proverb above. The same day that I was thinking of the proverb and found a great picture showing the words and expressing the essence of the adage, I got a notification of a new episode from the Podcast “The One You Feed” with Elisha Goldstein, PHD, a Mindfulness and Depression expert guest on the podcast hosted by Eric Zimmer. The show focuses on featuring authors, researchers, psychologists, thought leaders, spiritual teachers and public figures who talk about how listeners can act their way into a better and more fulfilling life. 1)
The conversations center on providing practical tools which the listener can use in their everyday life so they live with more joy, love, peace and fulfillment, and suffer less. In challenging times such as these, this focus, mindset and interion is even more important to face the extra stress and upheaval that have become our constant companions the past 14 months.
I find the title even more relevant now, with the fire hose of negative information about everything from the latest ICE focus state or area to the economy, to war and all that accompanies it. The past week, after the attack on Iran, has been filled with speculation, supposition and fear. I largely switched off the fine focus after hearing about the schoolgirls killed in the initial wave of bombings. Coming as it did during the Muslim time of Ramadan (think of how you would feel if there were military assaults on Easter or Christmas Day), the timing had to have been designed to both strike fear and disdain of the traditions of Iranians and Muslims as well as create fearful paranoia and angst among the American population. I stuck to my No social media for the first 90 minutes after waking’ rule to allow myself space and grace to pick how I wanted to start my day, which was with quiet appreciation and gratitude. I count what there is to be good for every morning to start my day. There are so many things that go on that list, without even repeating. I focus on the beauty of the day, and whatever crazy, funny thing my fur babies are doing. I then take time for meditation or breathwork before walking my dog and eating. Only then do I turn to the schedule for the day, and the carefully curated news that I follow on independent media and podcasts. My wolf is one of peace, joy, love, hope, humility, empathy, kindness and truth. The way of the Good Wolf leaves little room for the dour, pessimistic emotionality and attitude that is permeating the news and social media. The manipulation by the media to engender a sense of hopelessness and free ranging fear is by design to paralyze us and make us easier to control.
Fear sells and controls and distracts, even without armed conflict raging, along with worries of a world-wide conflagration and conflict. But each of us is either a contributor to the fruits of the good wolf or bad wolf by our attention and focus. And we are all free to make a choice about the wolf we feed, and, most importantly, how we feel after feeding our wolf of choice. And since we are all connected in this world, our focus on the attributes and qualities of the Good Wolf has the potential to influence others positively and shift the prevailing energy from fear to love. Pick your wolf, and your focus, and notice how you feel, and how those around you react to your energy and attitude. This is one of those situations when actions, and emotions and the energy associated with them speak so much louder than words. Choose positivity and love to make your world more vibrant, loving and peaceful, and those good vibes have every potential to create spreading ripple effect to the other side of the globe.
